Sepang Friday Intelligence: Leclerc Leads as Verstappen and Tyre Wear Shape the Weekend
Ferrari topped FP2, Red Bull showed pace across both sessions and heavy tyre degradation turned Sepang's return into a strategic test. The stopwatch does not tell the whole story.
Friday at a glance
Max Verstappen led FP1 in 1:37.520, 0.383 seconds ahead of George Russell, with Isack Hadjar third. In FP2, Charles Leclerc led with 1:37.528 ahead of Hadjar (+0.099) and Lando Norris (+0.137). Verstappen placed fourth (+0.257) and Lewis Hamilton fifth (+0.305). Different run plans limit direct comparisons.
Red Bull's medium-tyre question
Verstappen did not complete a soft-tyre run in FP2; his fourth-place time was set on mediums. Red Bull's underlying one-lap potential therefore remains difficult to judge from the classification alone. Hadjar's second place reinforces the team's strong Friday showing, though his confirmed five-place race grid penalty will complicate Sunday.
Ferrari answers; McLaren improves
Leclerc set the FP2 benchmark and Hamilton joined him in the top five. Norris recovered from 12th in FP1 to third in FP2, while McLaren reported meaningful progress as it adapted to unexpectedly challenging surface conditions.
Tyre degradation is the defining operational variable
The hot, abrasive circuit produced high degradation and a narrow operating window. Mercedes finished FP2 seventh and eighth, while its Friday tyre wear requires analysis ahead of qualifying. McLaren described degradation as consistently high and indicated that a two-stop race is a natural strategic direction based on its initial numbers; this is not a confirmed race strategy.
The rain that did not arrive
Rain threatened FP2, but the session stayed dry, allowing teams to gather valuable long-run data. Sepang's tropical weather remains a live uncertainty for qualifying and the Grand Prix; forecast percentages are not guarantees.
Five things to watch on Saturday
- Verstappen's representative soft-tyre qualifying pace.
- Whether Ferrari can convert Friday speed into qualifying performance.
- McLaren's continued progress after its FP1 struggles.
- Mercedes' tyre-management response.
- Any change in weather and the effect on track evolution.
