Verstappen Takes Sepang Pole as Hamilton Sets Up Sunday Showdown
Max Verstappen has secured his first pole of 2026, with Lewis Hamilton alongside him and a grid penalty reshaping the contest behind the front row.
Verstappen breaks through
Verstappen set a 1:35.130 in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, finishing 0.298 seconds ahead of Hamilton's Ferrari. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar qualified third on a 1:35.558, but a five-place internal-combustion-engine penalty drops him to eighth on the provisional starting grid.
The front of Sunday's grid
Verstappen and Hamilton share the front row. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli moves up to third alongside Charles Leclerc in fourth. McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are promoted to fifth and sixth, with George Russell seventh and Hadjar eighth. Final grid positions remain subject to official confirmation.
Championship Watch: an opening for Antonelli
Antonelli leads Russell by 66 points entering the weekend, 302 to 236. Antonelli's third-place grid position puts him four places ahead of his Mercedes team-mate, but Sunday's outcome remains open.
Mercedes faces an upgrade question
Despite Antonelli leading FP3, Mercedes struggled to reproduce that advantage in qualifying. Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged handling and straight-line-performance concerns after the latest upgrades. Russell's eighth-place qualifying classification makes race pace and tyre management particularly important.
Five Sunday variables
- The Verstappen–Hamilton launch and opening-lap positioning.
- Antonelli's opportunity from the second row.
- Hadjar's recovery from eighth after qualifying third.
- Tyre degradation and potential strategy divergence in Sepang's heat.
- Whether McLaren and Mercedes can recover through race pace.
Race information
The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia is scheduled for Sunday, October 4 at 15:00 local time. The race is scheduled for 56 laps of the 5.543 km Sepang International Circuit.
