Antonelli Wins United States GP — Title Waits for Mexico as Leclerc Beats Verstappen

Formula 1 labels its October 25 race result provisional; this report reflects the published classification at the time of writing.
How Antonelli turned pole into his ninth win
Antonelli controlled the opening phase after a clean getaway from pole, while Verstappen initially lost momentum and had to recover position against the Ferraris. Mercedes committed to a long first stint on medium tyres, extending Antonelli's run while several rivals moved toward two-stop strategies.
Antonelli made his sole scheduled stop at the end of Lap 24 and switched to hard tyres. His tyre management and consistent pace allowed him to regain the lead as the alternative strategies unfolded. A late Virtual Safety Car, triggered after Valtteri Bottas stopped his Cadillac, did not seriously threaten the Mercedes driver's advantage. He finished 13.078 seconds ahead of Leclerc after 56 laps.
Leclerc beats Verstappen; Ferrari converts pace into points
Ferrari had led every practice session but missed pole on Saturday. On Sunday, its race pace delivered a stronger return: Leclerc overtook Verstappen late for second and Hamilton finished fourth. Leclerc has now recorded consecutive runner-up finishes, following his second place in Singapore.
Verstappen recovered from a difficult start and a two-stop race to take third, extending his podium streak to six consecutive Grands Prix. His Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar finished sixth. Lando Norris lost ground late as his tyres aged and finished fifth, with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri seventh.
Why Antonelli did not clinch the championship in Austin
Antonelli entered the weekend with 340 points to George Russell's 238. Winning added 25 points, taking Antonelli to 365, but Russell finished eighth and scored four points to reach 242. Hamilton's fourth place added 12 points, taking him to 241. Those results kept the Drivers' Championship mathematically open despite Antonelli's victory.
DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP · AFTER UNITED STATES GP
Five Grands Prix remain: Mexico City, São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Only Russell and Hamilton remain mathematical challengers. Antonelli's nine wins already give him a countback advantage that neither rival can overturn.
Mexico title scenario: ninth place is enough
Mexico City offers Antonelli a straightforward path to his first world title. Finishing ninth or better guarantees the championship under the current calendar and points rules, regardless of Russell's or Hamilton's result. Ninth is worth two points: even if Russell wins Mexico, Antonelli would leave with a 100-point advantage and four races remaining. An eventual tie on points would favor Antonelli because he already has more race wins than Russell can achieve this season.
Antonelli can also become champion with fewer points if neither rival takes enough points out of his lead. These calculations assume full race points, unchanged classification and no later points deductions.

Constructors' Championship: Red Bull and McLaren tied
Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship on 607 points, 133 ahead of Ferrari on 474. Red Bull and McLaren are tied on 355 points, making the battle for third a major focus heading into Mexico City. Racing Bulls follows on 102.
Mercedes' contrasting Austin results illustrate the weekend: Antonelli converted pole into victory, while Russell recovered only eighth after his penalty. Ferrari's double top-four finish strengthened its hold on second place.
Next race: Mexico City, October 30–November 1
The paddock heads to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the Mexico City Grand Prix on October 30–November 1. The 4.304-kilometre circuit hosts a 71-lap race on Sunday, November 1. Its altitude of more than 2,000 metres challenges cooling and aerodynamic efficiency, making it a distinct technical test after Austin.
