How Antonelli Can Win the 2026 F1 Championship in Austin: The Key Scenarios
Kimi Antonelli arrives at the United States Grand Prix with a 102-point championship lead. Austin is his first opportunity to clinch the 2026 drivers’ title, but a victory alone would not be enough.
Why Austin can decide the title
Six Grands Prix remain in the 2026 season, each offering up to 25 points for a win. There are no more Sprint events scheduled. After Austin, five races and 125 points will remain. Antonelli must leave Texas at least 125 points ahead of every challenger, with any equality decided by countback.
The clearest championship-clinching result
Antonelli wins; Russell finishes ninth or lower; Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. A win would lift Antonelli to 365 points. Russell ninth would have 240, leaving a 125-point gap; Hamilton fifth would have 239, leaving 126. At an equal-points finish, Antonelli's existing win count would prevail over Russell's. Russell eighth or Hamilton fourth would keep the title mathematically open.
Antonelli cannot clinch at Austin without winning: even a second-place finish would leave too few points between him and Russell if Russell scored nothing.
Championship watch after Singapore
Russell's power-unit dilemma
Russell recovered to ninth at Singapore after an engine-related grid penalty. Further power-unit changes later in the season could affect his remaining title challenge, but any additional penalty must be treated as unconfirmed until Mercedes or the FIA announces it.
Verstappen's resurgence changes the race outlook
Max Verstappen won both the Singapore Sprint and Grand Prix, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished second on Sunday. Antonelli may control the championship mathematics, but he faces strong opposition in the race itself.
United States Grand Prix: October 23–25
Circuit of the Americas hosts the 56-lap Grand Prix on Sunday, October 25. The race is scheduled for 3:00 PM Austin local time. The weekend uses the conventional three-practice format rather than the Sprint format.
Paddock Command verdict
Antonelli is firmly in control of the championship, but a title celebration in Austin requires a particular combination of results. Victory is essential; Russell and Hamilton must also score few enough points. Otherwise the championship battle continues to the following round.
