Alonso Stays: Aston Martin Retains Its 2027 Driver Lineup
Fernando Alonso has committed to another Formula 1 season with Aston Martin. With Lance Stroll also staying, the team is choosing continuity while confronting a difficult 2026 campaign.
Fernando Alonso is not finished with Formula 1. Aston Martin confirmed on Tuesday that the two-time world champion has extended his contract through the 2027 season, keeping its Alonso–Lance Stroll pairing together for a fifth consecutive year. The agreement means Alonso will compete beyond his 46th birthday. Reuters reported the announcement on September 29.
Why the decision matters
Alonso had left his next move open while assessing whether to continue racing. His decision now resolves one important question in the 2027 driver market. For Aston Martin, retaining both drivers also removes an immediate lineup change from a demanding technical recovery programme.
Continuity through a difficult season
The timing is striking. Through 15 completed rounds of the 2026 championship, Aston Martin had scored just three points, all earned by Alonso, according to Reuters. The team has struggled with both its car and Honda power unit. Alonso's extension is therefore a commitment to a project still trying to translate its resources and personnel into race results, not a reward for strong recent form.
Another year for the Newey–Honda project
Aston Martin's long-term ambitions centre on its technical organisation and Honda partnership, with Adrian Newey leading the team's technical direction. Keeping Alonso provides experienced race and development feedback while the team works to address the weaknesses exposed in 2026. The contract announcement does not itself establish when Aston Martin will become competitive; that must be demonstrated on track.
What comes next
Attention turns to how quickly Aston Martin can improve reliability, power-unit performance and the overall package before 2027. For Alonso, the immediate task remains extracting what he can from the current car while contributing to that development work.
The next championship round takes place at Sepang on October 2–4, followed by Singapore on October 9–11. Paddock Command will continue its race-week intelligence coverage alongside developments in the 2027 driver market.
