Qualifying update: Verstappen Racing 15th, Boutsen VDS on pole

Friday’s combined qualifying classification places the #3 Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing entry 15th overall among 61 classified cars. Ben Barnicoat set 1:43.124 in Q1, Chris Lulham 1:42.655 in Q2 and Max Verstappen 1:42.093 in Q3. The three-driver average was 1:42.624. These figures are taken from the organizer’s provisional combined qualifying result; any subsequent stewards’ or scrutineering amendments take precedence.

The #2 Boutsen VDS Porsche of Morris Schuring, Dorian Boccolacci and Alessio Picariello secured pole with a 1:42.071 average, 0.553 seconds ahead of the Verstappen Racing crew. The #17 Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed entry qualified second on 1:42.179, with the #80 Lionspeed GP Porsche third on 1:42.250. The #3 Mercedes is 15th on the published order, not 15th in Verstappen’s individual Q3 session.

Independent trackside reporting described bouncing and inconsistent balance on the Mercedes during qualifying. Those observations are a possible explanation for the lost time, not an officially confirmed mechanical diagnosis. The three-hour race leaves scope to recover positions through clean stints, traffic management and pit execution, but the grid result does not support predicting a podium.

Verstappen is on the Portimão entry list

Max Verstappen is set to make his GT World Challenge Europe race debut at Portimão, Portugal, on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The official series entry list names him in the #3 Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing car alongside Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat. They will contest the three-hour Endurance Cup season finale in the Pro class, using a Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO.

This is not Verstappen’s first GT3 appearance, nor a Formula 1 championship round. It is his first start in GT World Challenge Europe, a separate series with shared-car endurance racing, driver changes and a large multi-class grid. Verstappen Racing has already competed in the championship; the new element is Verstappen himself joining its race lineup.

When to watch: the verified Portimão timetable

Friday’s practice and combined qualifying sessions are complete. The three-hour main race is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 17:00 Portugal local time (16:00 UTC; 9:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time). The organizer’s published timetable remains subject to event changes.

The organizer says GT World Challenge sessions will be streamed free on the GT World YouTube channel. The championship event page and official entry list are the best references for late schedule or lineup revisions.

A serious GT3 field, not an exhibition

The official entry list includes more than 60 GT3 cars across multiple classes. Verstappen’s #3 entry is in Pro. Among the notable names on the grid are Valentino Rossi in the #46 Team WRT BMW, along with established GT specialists from Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, Aston Martin and other manufacturers. The event is a full championship finale rather than a promotional demonstration.

A three-hour endurance race tests more than single-lap speed. Traffic management, handovers, pit execution and consistency across stints can all decide the result. Those variables make a direct comparison with Verstappen’s recent Formula 1 results inappropriate, even if the same driver is at the wheel.

Why it matters in the Formula 1 break

Verstappen arrives after consecutive Formula 1 Grand Prix victories at Sepang and Singapore. Red Bull has narrowed its constructors’ deficit to McLaren to seven points, 332 to 339, while Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship on 340 points, 102 ahead of George Russell. Those are the latest post-Singapore F1 standings, not points at stake in Portugal.

Formula 1’s next race is the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on October 23–25. Portimão offers a competitive look at Verstappen in a different discipline during the gap, but it does not forecast Red Bull’s pace in Austin or change the championship mathematics.

What Paddock Command will watch

Qualifying has established a provisional P15 starting position for the #3 crew. Saturday’s checkpoints are the opening stint, traffic management in the 61-car field, pit-stop execution, reliability and the final classification. No race finishing position or podium should be reported before the organizer publishes the result.

For F1 readers, the storyline is Verstappen’s willingness to race outside Formula 1 immediately before a consequential Austin weekend. The Red Bull engineering transition and Antonelli’s potential title-clinching scenario remain separate, already-covered F1 stories.

Paddock Command assessment

The qualifying result materially changes the race outlook: Verstappen Racing faces a recovery drive from P15 rather than a front-row start. This is an update to the existing October 15 preview, not a second article. Keep it below the Austin Formula 1 coverage, and replace the qualifying outlook with the official race classification after Saturday’s finish.
