2026 Championship Watch: Antonelli Takes a 59-Point Lead to Monza
The championship table says Antonelli is comfortably ahead. The recent form says the contest is still producing movement behind him — and Monza offers a very different test.

Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship with 242 points. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are tied on 183, while Lando Norris sits fourth on 159. A 59-point advantage is more than two standard Grand Prix wins, so the burden is increasingly on the chasing group to create weekends where Antonelli loses substantial ground.
That changes race management. Antonelli can afford to think in championship terms: high-value finishes, limited risk and avoiding zeroes. The drivers behind him need more than consistency. They need wins, poles, strategic leverage and — inevitably — some weekends where the leader does not score heavily.
Norris is the momentum variable
Norris won Hungary and then won again at Zandvoort. That does not erase the 83-point gap to Antonelli, but it changes the shape of the chase because McLaren is now converting competitive pace into victories. The title math still favors Antonelli; the form line gives Norris a reason to keep applying pressure.
Mercedes has strength and complexity
Russell and Hamilton being tied for second creates an unusual internal picture around the championship leader. Mercedes can score heavily with multiple cars, but individual title ambitions do not always align neatly with team optimization. How the team handles track position, pit priority and late-race calls may become increasingly important if the points gaps tighten.
What would actually change the title picture?
One rival win with Antonelli finishing second is not enough. The gap moves slowly under that pattern. The championship changes more sharply when a rival wins and the leader finishes outside the top positions, retires, or has a low-scoring Sprint and Grand Prix combination. Monza is a useful reset point
The Italian Grand Prix changes the car-performance equation. If Mercedes remains strongest on a low-downforce circuit, Antonelli can reinforce control. If McLaren, Ferrari or another team owns the efficiency window, the chasing pack gets an opportunity to move the trend before the championship heads toward its final third.
