Antonelli Extends His Championship Lead to 84 Points

Sepang creates the biggest recent swing

Antonelli entered Sepang 66 points ahead of Russell. He finished second for 18 points, while Russell retired late with a suspected power-unit failure and scored no Grand Prix points. The resulting totals are Antonelli 320 and Russell 236, widening the gap to 84.

Why the retirement matters beyond one result

Russell was already facing a substantial deficit. Losing an entire Grand Prix scoring opportunity increases the pressure on every remaining weekend, while Antonelli can increasingly prioritise consistent high-value finishes over marginal risks.

Singapore adds Sprint points to the equation

The next round is the Singapore Grand Prix on October 9–11, and it uses the Sprint format. Teams get only FP1 before Sprint Qualifying, with points available in Saturday's Sprint before Sunday's 62-lap Grand Prix.

That compressed structure gives Russell two competitive scoring opportunities to respond, but it also gives Antonelli two chances to protect or extend the margin.

What changes in the title fight

The championship is not decided, but the burden of recovery has shifted further toward Russell. Mercedes reliability remains a central variable after the Sepang failure, while Max Verstappen's victory and Lewis Hamilton's podium show that non-Mercedes drivers can remove valuable points from either contender.
