Mercedes confirms the upgraded W17 was faster

Mercedes' Singapore specification comparison has given the team a more positive assessment of its latest aerodynamic package. Kimi Antonelli retained the updated W17 configuration while George Russell drove an earlier specification, allowing Mercedes to examine how each responded to the Marina Bay circuit.

Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin confirmed that Antonelli's updated package had become the faster specification by the end of the weekend. Mercedes found a better setup window after struggling to extract the expected benefit when the upgrade was introduced at Sepang.

The comparison indicates progress but is not a guarantee of superiority at every circuit. The team still needs to confirm how its package performs across different track characteristics.

Antonelli strengthens his championship position

Antonelli finished third in Singapore, while Russell recovered from 19th on the starting grid to finish ninth. Their championship totals are now 340 and 238 points respectively, making Antonelli's advantage 102 points.

Antonelli has a mathematical opportunity to clinch the title at Austin on October 25. One qualifying scenario requires an Antonelli victory, Russell ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton fifth or lower. Victory alone does not guarantee the championship.

Russell considers Las Vegas for another penalty

Russell's Sepang power-unit failure forced Mercedes into further component changes before Singapore. Following the race, Russell said another penalty is likely before the season ends and identified Las Vegas as a possible venue.

The strategic reasoning is that Mercedes may prefer to serve a grid penalty at a track where overtaking and recovery through the field appear more feasible than on Singapore's narrow streets.

No additional Las Vegas grid penalty has been confirmed or imposed. It remains a possible decision rather than an official sanction.

Red Bull adds pressure

Max Verstappen arrives at the next round following consecutive Grand Prix victories at Sepang and Singapore. Red Bull's recent improvements have increased competitive pressure on Mercedes, and team principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged the team's strong form while noting that Mercedes has not fully extracted the benefit from its own upgrades.

Austin becomes the next technical test

The United States Grand Prix takes place October 23–25 at Circuit of the Americas. The traditional weekend format provides three practice sessions, giving Mercedes time to evaluate its upgraded setup before qualifying.

Paddock Command watch: Mercedes' preferred W17 specification, the setup window at Austin, Russell's remaining power-unit allocation and Verstappen's continued momentum.
