F1's next weekend starts earlier than usual

The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix breaks Formula 1's normal Friday-to-Sunday rhythm. FP1 and FP2 take place on Thursday, September 24, FP3 and qualifying follow on Friday, and the Grand Prix starts at 15:00 local time on Saturday, September 26.

For fans, the practical message is simple: waiting until Friday for the first practice sessions or Sunday for the race means missing a major part of the weekend.

Paddock Command schedule alertFP1: Thu 12:30 · FP2: Thu 16:00 · FP3: Fri 12:30 · Qualifying: Fri 16:00 · Grand Prix: Sat 15:00. All times are Baku local time.

Why the Azerbaijan Grand Prix moved to Saturday

Formula 1 and the FIA moved the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix from Sunday, September 27 to Saturday, September 26 following a request from the Azerbaijan promoter and relevant government stakeholders to accommodate a national day. The entire race-weekend programme therefore shifts forward by one day.

The FIA's amended 2026 calendar now lists Azerbaijan for September 24–26, making the Saturday race part of the official championship schedule rather than a late race-week adjustment.

Baku is a very different test from Madrid

Madrid asked teams to learn a brand-new Formula 1 venue. Baku presents the opposite challenge: teams know the circuit, but the 6.003-kilometre street layout remains one of the calendar's most extreme aerodynamic compromises.

The narrow Old Town section demands precision and usable downforce, while the long waterfront run rewards low drag and straight-line efficiency. Heavy braking zones, walls and rapidly changing track conditions add another layer of risk, particularly in qualifying.

The numbers that define the weekend

Baku City Circuit measures 6.003 kilometres. The Grand Prix runs for 51 laps and 306.049 kilometres. Formula 1 lists Charles Leclerc's 1:43.009 from 2019 as the circuit's fastest race lap.

The circuit first appeared on the Formula 1 calendar in 2016 as the European Grand Prix before becoming the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 2017.

Championship pressure moves east

Kimi Antonelli heads to Baku after consecutive victories at Monza and Madrid and an 81-point championship advantage over George Russell. Paddock Command's Championship Watch already carries the complete post-Madrid points context, so the more important question for Baku is how the championship leader handles a circuit where track position can change quickly.

That makes braking stability, straight-line efficiency, reliability and qualifying confidence more important early watch points than the raw championship margin alone.
