The inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madring produced a result that looked very different from its opening phase. Lando Norris converted pole into the early lead while Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen remained close enough to keep the strategic pressure alive.
The race changed when Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20 and triggered a Virtual Safety Car. Mercedes and Red Bull brought Antonelli, George Russell and Verstappen into the pits under reduced-speed conditions. Norris could not reach pit entry before the VSC ended and had to stop under green-flag conditions.
McLaren's problem became worse when Norris then suffered a slow seven-second tyre change. He emerged behind Charles Leclerc, Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell, turning a race he had led into a recovery drive.
Antonelli converts opportunity into victory
Antonelli did not need to pass Norris on track to take control. The VSC handed Mercedes the strategic opening, and the championship leader was positioned to use it.
Leclerc stayed out during the neutralisation and temporarily led while Ferrari waited for a possible Safety Car or red flag. When Leclerc finally stopped at the end of Lap 48, Antonelli inherited the lead and controlled the final phase.
The victory is Antonelli's eighth Grand Prix win of 2026 and his second consecutive victory after Monza. He finished 4.351 seconds ahead of Verstappen, with Norris another 0.738 seconds behind in third.
Norris loses a race he had positioned himself to win
Norris had done the difficult part on Saturday by taking pole by 0.011 seconds and carried that advantage into the opening stint. His pace was strong enough to keep the race under control before the neutralisation timing turned against McLaren.
After the slow stop, Norris recovered and spent the closing laps pressuring Verstappen for second. He drew alongside after the Red Bull ran wide at Turn 5 but could not complete the move.
Verstappen maximizes the strategic swing
Verstappen used the VSC window to move into the decisive lead group and ultimately finished second. Red Bull kept him close enough to benefit when the race changed, and he defended the position from Norris through the final laps.
Leclerc salvages fourth as Hamilton retires
Leclerc's alternative strategy briefly put Ferrari at the front, but the hoped-for later neutralisation never arrived. His Lap 48 stop dropped him back to fourth, where he finished ahead of Russell.
Lewis Hamilton's race ended early with a brake problem. Lance Stroll later retired with brake trouble as well, while Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez also failed to finish.
Lawson and Colapinto capitalize behind the leaders
Liam Lawson finished sixth for Red Bull, followed by Franco Colapinto for Alpine. Oscar Piastri recovered to eighth after early front-wing damage, with Arvid Lindblad ninth and Nico Hulkenberg taking the final point in tenth.
What Madrid changed in the championship
Antonelli leaves Madrid with 292 points and an 81-point lead over Russell on 211. Hamilton remains third on 191 despite his retirement, Norris rises to 186, Leclerc has 167 and Verstappen 145.
Recent form strengthens that picture further. Antonelli's last five Grand Prix finishes are P1, P3, P2, P1 and P1: four podiums and three victories across that span.
Madrid's first race delivers a clear strategic lesson
Madring's debut weekend began with questions about overtaking, tyre behaviour and how Formula 1's newest circuit would race. Sunday supplied one clear answer: track position matters, but neutralisation timing can overturn it instantly.
Antonelli: back-to-back wins increase his championship lead to 81 points.
Norris: pole and early control became third after the VSC and slow pit stop turned against McLaren.
Verstappen: remained close enough to capitalize and converted the opportunity into second.
Russell: fifth limits the damage but leaves him further behind his team mate.
Hamilton: a brake-related retirement turns a second-row start into zero points.
Madrid: the first Madring race reinforces the premium on strategic timing.
Next: Baku
Formula 1 now heads toward the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend on September 24–26. Baku presents a completely different technical problem from Madrid.
Madrid began as an unknown. It ends with a familiar championship reality: Antonelli continues to turn opportunities into victories, and the rest of the field has another 81-point problem to solve.
