Russell Leads Revised Baku Grid as Penalties Reshape the Order

ROUND 15 · BAKU CITY CIRCUIT · RACE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

George Russell converted his strong Thursday form into Azerbaijan Grand Prix pole position with a commanding 1:42.526. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified second, 0.837 seconds behind, with Oscar Piastri third and returning Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar fourth. But the biggest championship development came in Q1: points leader Kimi Antonelli hit the inside wall at Turn 1, damaged his Mercedes and qualified 16th.

Russell turns practice pace into pole

Russell had led both Thursday practice sessions before Max Verstappen edged him by 0.099 seconds in Friday's FP3. Qualifying delivered a clearer result. Russell's final Q3 lap put him eight tenths ahead of Leclerc, whose margin over Piastri was just one thousandth of a second. Russell starts at the front of a grid where a clean getaway and the long run to Turn 1 will matter immediately.

Antonelli faces a recovery race

Antonelli's qualifying ended after contact with the inside wall at Turn 1 in Q1 damaged the front-left of his car. He qualified 16th, leaving the championship leader a demanding route through traffic. He entered Baku on 292 points, 81 clear of Russell on 211. Those standings have not changed through qualifying, but the split grid positions make Saturday's race especially consequential for the title battle.

Hadjar returns with fourth place

Isack Hadjar's comeback weekend gained momentum in qualifying. After missing three races with a wrist injury and losing valuable running to technical problems on Thursday, the Red Bull driver secured fourth on the grid. He starts ahead of Lando Norris and team-mate Max Verstappen, who qualified eighth.

McLaren and Ferrari in striking range

Leclerc will share the front row with Russell. Piastri starts third, only 0.001 seconds behind the Ferrari, while Norris lines up fifth. McLaren's qualifying result gives the team a more encouraging competitive reference after Thursday's interrupted upgrade evaluation. Lewis Hamilton starts sixth, with Pierre Gasly seventh.

Williams gets a qualifying return from its upgrade

Carlos Sainz reached Q3 and qualified ninth with the upgraded Williams, but a five-place penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags drops him to 14th on the revised grid. Franco Colapinto moves to ninth. A single qualifying session does not settle Williams’ upgrade race-pace or tyre-management questions.

Saturday: four stories to track

Russell's launch from pole, Antonelli's progress from 16th, Hadjar's ability to convert fourth on his return, and the contest between Leclerc and Piastri are the principal race-day watch points. Baku's long straights and narrow sections create overtaking opportunities as well as considerable risk. The 51-lap Grand Prix starts Saturday at 15:00 local time (UTC+4); the starting grid remains subject to any subsequent official changes.

PADDOCK COMMAND WATCH: Russell has the grid advantage, but Antonelli's damage limitation and the race strategies of Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull will determine how much qualifying reshapes the championship narrative.
