2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Preview: Antonelli Takes an 81-Point Lead Into Baku

Formula 1 leaves Europe with Kimi Antonelli firmly in control of the championship, but Baku adds walls, huge braking zones, extreme straight-line speeds and one of the calendar's most unforgiving street-circuit tests.

Antonelli arrives with control of the championship

Formula 1 leaves Europe with Kimi Antonelli firmly in control of the championship, but Baku offers almost everything a championship leader would rather avoid: walls, huge braking zones, extreme straight-line speeds and a circuit capable of changing a weekend in seconds.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is also running to an unusual timetable in 2026. Practice begins Thursday, qualifying takes place Friday and the 51-lap Grand Prix starts Saturday, September 26.

Antonelli arrives after consecutive victories at Monza and Madrid. His Spanish Grand Prix win was his eighth victory of 2026 and increased his championship total to 292 points. George Russell sits second on 211, leaving 81 points between the Mercedes team mates entering Azerbaijan.

Paddock Command watch pointAntonelli does not need to dominate Baku. A controlled high-scoring weekend that prevents Russell, Hamilton, Norris or another rival from making a major points gain would strengthen his championship position again.

Baku demands an aerodynamic compromise

Baku City Circuit measures 6.003 kilometres, with the Grand Prix covering 51 laps and 306.049 kilometres.

Its defining characteristic is contradiction. The narrow Old City section rewards precision, stability and usable downforce. The long waterfront run places an enormous premium on low drag and straight-line efficiency.

Teams therefore cannot optimize the car for one part of the lap without accepting consequences elsewhere. Braking confidence is equally important. Several major stops follow very high-speed sections, while the walls severely punish lock-ups and positioning errors. That combination makes qualifying particularly consequential.

Williams brings the upgrade it has been waiting for

One of Baku's most important technical stories will happen further down the championship order. Williams is introducing its long-awaited major FW48 upgrade package.

The team has fallen backward during the development race and has not scored since its early-season points finishes. Carlos Sainz believes the update should bring Williams closer to fighting for points. Alex Albon expects a useful step but has warned that the team's deficit has become too large for one package to guarantee an immediate transformation.

That makes Baku both a race weekend and a development audit. If the FW48 becomes measurably more competitive, Williams gains confidence not only in the car but in the engineering processes behind its future development.

Hadjar returns with his 2027 Red Bull future secured

Isack Hadjar will return to Red Bull in Baku after missing Zandvoort, Monza and Madrid with a wrist injury. Liam Lawson returns to Racing Bulls after three substitute appearances.

The comeback now coincides with longer-term certainty: Red Bull has extended Hadjar for 2027, keeping him alongside Max Verstappen. Hadjar says the wrist is strong enough to race after successful simulator work, although he expects some pain to remain.

The timetable changes everything

This is not a normal Friday-to-Sunday Formula 1 weekend. The 2026 Azerbaijan programme has been shifted forward by one day. FP1 and FP2 run Thursday, September 24; FP3 and qualifying follow Friday, September 25; and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix starts at 15:00 Baku local time on Saturday, September 26.

Baku scheduleFP1 Thu 12:30 · FP2 Thu 16:00 · FP3 Fri 12:30 · Qualifying Fri 16:00 · Grand Prix Sat 15:00. All times Baku local time (UTC+4).

Five questions that will define Baku

1. Does Antonelli continue converting championship control into victories?

Two consecutive wins have moved the title picture decisively toward the Mercedes driver.

2. Can Russell generate a championship response?

With an 81-point deficit, finishing immediately behind Antonelli will not substantially reduce the gap.

3. Does the Williams upgrade work?

Raw finishing position matters, but the stronger technical signal will be whether the FW48 closes its measurable performance deficit to the midfield.

4. How does Hadjar handle his Baku comeback?

Thursday practice will show whether three races away and the recovering wrist affect braking consistency, confidence or sustained running at Baku.

5. Who finds the right Baku compromise?

Straight-line speed alone is not enough. Neither is maximum downforce. The strongest package will combine braking stability, confidence through the Old City and enough efficiency to defend and attack on the long run toward Turn 1.

What Paddock Command will watch next

Thursday practice becomes the first real test of every pre-weekend assumption. Williams' upgrade can finally be measured against its rivals. Mercedes' advantage can be tested on an extreme street circuit. Hadjar's comeback can be measured in real track conditions. And the first long-run and qualifying simulations will show whether another team has the pace to interrupt Antonelli's momentum.

From there, Paddock Command's Baku coverage moves quickly: Thursday Practice Intelligence, Friday Qualifying Intelligence and Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix Debrief.

Baku does not need to decide the championship to matter. At this stage of the season, every weekend Antonelli prevents his rivals from substantially reducing the gap moves the championship another step toward him.
