George Russell converts pole into victory by just 0.196 seconds over Max Verstappen, while Isack Hadjar celebrates a comeback podium and Kimi Antonelli limits the damage from 16th on the grid.
Race complete · Round 15Russell converts a commanding weekend into a narrow win
George Russell completed his Baku weekend with victory after leading both Thursday practice sessions and securing pole. The Mercedes driver initially controlled the race, but two Safety Car periods eliminated his advantage and gave Max Verstappen a late opportunity. Russell crossed the line 0.196 seconds ahead for his third victory of 2026 and eighth career Grand Prix win.
Verstappen advanced from eighth on the grid to second. After the final restart he closed relentlessly, and Russell reported losing turbo power after lifting for a late yellow flag. Verstappen drew alongside on the run to the flag but could not complete the pass.
Official top five
1. George Russell — Mercedes — 25 pts
2. Max Verstappen — Red Bull — +0.196s — 18 pts
3. Isack Hadjar — Red Bull — +10.704s — 15 pts
4. Charles Leclerc — Ferrari — +14.136s — 12 pts
5. Kimi Antonelli — Mercedes — +14.512s — 10 pts
The championship swing: 81 points becomes 66
Antonelli arrived in Baku leading Russell 292–211. Russell’s win added 25 points, while Antonelli’s fifth place earned 10, moving the Mercedes pair to 302–236. Russell gained 15 points in one race; Antonelli retains a 66-point advantage.
Qualifying had put Antonelli on the back foot after his Turn 1 Q1 crash. He started 16th, briefly fell to 17th and recovered through the field to fifth, including a late pass on Lewis Hamilton. That recovery prevented an even larger points swing.
Hadjar turns an injury comeback into a podium
After missing three Grands Prix with a wrist injury, Hadjar returned to Red Bull in Baku with his 2027 contract confirmed. Fourth in qualifying became third in the race, completing a Red Bull double podium. His result makes the comeback a performance story as well as a fitness milestone.
Two Safety Cars reshape the contest
Alex Albon’s crash at Turn 6 triggered the first Safety Car and prompted front-running pit stops. At the restart, Verstappen passed Oscar Piastri for second, before contact involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris led to another Safety Car. Norris retired, and Piastri later locked up at Turn 1 while running third, eventually finishing 14th.
What the result changes
Russell leaves Azerbaijan with a reduced championship deficit and a complete practice-to-race performance. Antonelli leaves with his championship lead intact after a substantial recovery. Hadjar has delivered an immediate podium on his return, while McLaren must examine a race that ended without points despite Piastri’s early podium position.
Next stop: the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia
Formula 1 heads to Sepang on October 2–4 for the rescheduled Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The unusual venue switch deserves a separate next-race preview: Sepang returns to the calendar for the first time since 2017, with a 56-lap race scheduled for Sunday, October 4 at 15:00 local time.
