F1 Returns to Sepang: Why the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix Is Racing in Malaysia
Formula 1 heads back to Sepang for the first time since 2017. Here is why Bahrain's Grand Prix is being held in Malaysia, the confirmed weekend schedule and the circuit challenge awaiting the field.
Why the Bahrain Grand Prix is taking place in Malaysia
Formula 1 and the FIA announced on July 26 that Sepang International Circuit would host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on October 2–4, between Azerbaijan and Singapore. The arrangement was reached with Bahrain and Malaysia to preserve a Grand Prix that otherwise would not have taken place. The event is listed on Formula 1's current calendar under its Bahrain name, but the racing takes place at Sepang.
The July announcement noted that the arrangement was subject to final agreements and official sign-off; Formula 1's current calendar and event timetable list the October event at Sepang.

Sepang Circuit Intelligence: a different test after Baku
NEW · SEP 28: Sepang Circuit Intelligence: tyres, abrasive asphalt, heat and strategy →
The 5.543-kilometre Sepang International Circuit hosts a scheduled 56-lap race covering 310.398 kilometres. The circuit debuted on the Formula 1 calendar in 1999 and last held a Grand Prix in 2017. Its fast, flowing sections, substantial braking zones and long straights make it a different engineering problem from the tight Baku street circuit.
The fast Turns 5–6 sequence rewards stable high-speed balance. Long straights and the Turn 15 hairpin create braking and overtaking opportunities. Sepang's tropical climate is another strategic variable: heat, humidity and the possibility of sudden rain should be tracked as race week progresses, without treating a specific forecast as confirmed this far out.
Championship Watch: Russell needs to build on Baku
Following George Russell's Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory, Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' championship 302–236, a 66-point margin. Russell's Baku win reduced the deficit by 15 points, but Sepang asks whether Mercedes can sustain its form on a circuit with very different demands. The championship totals remain unchanged until the next points-scoring session.
Three stories to follow during race week
Mercedes: Russell arrives from victory while Antonelli seeks a cleaner weekend after recovering from his Baku qualifying setback. Red Bull: Verstappen and Hadjar arrive after finishing second and third in Azerbaijan, giving the team a strong recent form line. McLaren: Sepang is an immediate opportunity to assess the team's response after a difficult Baku result.
Mercedes W17 Upgrade Watch: Sepang's Friday Test
October 1 technical watch: Mercedes arrives at Sepang with a new development package for the W17. Team principal Toto Wolff says the team wants to understand the changes quickly and assess whether they deliver another performance step. Until the package runs in representative conditions, its competitive effect remains unproven.
Friday's practice sessions should offer the first meaningful evidence. Sepang's fast corners, traction zones and demanding heat create a different evaluation environment from Baku. Watch the Mercedes drivers' balance through the high-speed sections, their long-run tyre behaviour and any cooling-related setup compromises.
Championship context: George Russell arrives following his Azerbaijan victory, with Kimi Antonelli holding a 66-point lead in the drivers' standings. A strong or difficult Friday for either driver should be treated as an early signal, not a definitive performance verdict: fuel loads, run plans and tyre choices can distort practice comparisons.
Paddock Command Intelligence: Mercedes' upgrade is a key Friday watch item alongside the already confirmed Heat Hazard conditions. The next update should use observed practice data to separate development expectations from measured performance.

What Paddock Command will track next
Watch for the confirmed tyre allocation, updated Malaysian weather outlook, any team-specific aerodynamic packages and Friday's representative long-run data. Those developments will inform the dedicated Sepang Circuit Intelligence and practice reports later in the week.
